Okay, as discussed in another thread ...

We have here a couple, or many, fans of Boards Of Canada.

face it, their music is great.

So, this thread will be the rally point on the project BOB : Boards Of Belgium.

This is not an ebel competition, it's just an artistic project, between members of electrobel.

The aim is to release in 2007 a netalbum as a tribute to BOC. on the ebel net-label :)

We'll use this thread to discuss techniques and other things related to BOC.
Maybe i'll try to open another board in the forum so that more than one thread can be done on the subject.

imo it'll be very hard to reach BoC's qualities, but it sure's worth it to give it a try!

Boards of Canada, if you don't know them, it's a group consisting of 2 people who make IDM, more kind of a melodic IDM, and also one of my all-time heroes http://www.music70.com/

Well I couldn't wait any longer. I've started working on a track having this BOC-BOB thing in mind.

As for techniques and their production qualities. I've read in a wire-interview (only interview I've found so far) that a lot has to do with an eldering-proces each track has to go through. They trie to make things sound like old tapes.

What seems to work every time is lfo's going slightly out of tune, like a tape that laid in the sun in your car to long. But i'm affraid that's not enough.

Yes, that helps, either plaing with the pitch-bend, or if your synth allows it, setting an lfo on an osc detune or pitch ...
has to be very smooth though.
what i've been experimenting is using multiple oscillators with slight detuning on them to get a beat frequency.

don't forget, one of their techniques is reversing too, boc is known for reversed sounds ;)

that's why it's called a tribute.

because everyone when trying to make a BOC song will make it the way they like a boc song, also everyone will put it's own personal touch to it.

tribute @ wikipedia

Well I sincerely like the idea, am working on a BOC inspired track so if I can finish it in time I'm in!

Poductionwise: detuned LFO's, reversed samples is the thing. One thing I also seem to hear in Boc tracks is some sort of modulated gain or amp-simulator on their synths. I was trying that out and it sounds like an old tape!

Cheers

yes i also think it is not such a good idea.enough boards of canada ripp offs. releasing an album full of them is quite strange to me .electrobel should make publicity for its differcity(not that i'm scholar example of originality or sum but a few have their own style on this site).i'm not one with the concept.actually i think it's pretty lame.

we are realy interested (me and inuit), we already have some Boc flavored tracks

http://www.electrobel.be/muzik/7052/how_to_dance_on_Intelligent_Dance_Music%3F

but we can do a other one excepecialy for this project....

Well I understand what you're saying and in one way of speaking it is kinda ripping off! But I am working on this track totally inspired by BOC and I am trying to let it sound like Boc so I'm not gonna say it came out of the Blue. Or I'm not gonna say I invented the Hot Water!

Second reason: I like Boc, so I am more than pleased to hear some Boc inspired artists on one disc, and I'd be totally honoured If I may be part of that!

Anyway, everybody's opinion counts, so respect to yours, but here's mine! :)
