Forum : Producing Help : Producing With Reason
lets make a toppic for mixing and producing with propellerhead reason, like we saw earlyer this week for mixing, but here only for propellerhead reason,
post ur links and tutorial pictures here, like how to master a track, witch mastering tool ur using for each specific sound, how to maximize (limiting), sidechain, vocoding, and how the buttons on the devices should be set ect....
i will start with a few pictures in the following posts

when u use the redrum, here is how to do it to put every redrum sound in a mixer so u can use some effects on every single of them instead of on the whole thing (effects on mixer 1,2,3 and 4), press tab to toggle rear or front, effect on single redrum sound basics :)

another way to play drums: import them in the NNXT to have way more possibilities

mmmh sure? why would they create a redrum then??
but indeed when i think about it the nnxt handle more features for any sample...i dont know

redrum is good to have fast results that don't need too precise finetuning. if you look at the patches of the NNXT, it has a lot of drums!

making beats with the NNX, yes interesting, one more trick, u can use the malstrom as an effect on the mixer also, well some of the buttons of the malstrom, not all of them, u can use it on the redrum beat or nnx beat, or even sounds, everything in the mixer :) accord it this way and just select a patch in the malstrom and start to turn the buttons :) dont forget to turn on the effect button above the mixline of ur sound on the mixer also (1,2,3 and 4)

use the malström to modulate all kinda knobs with CV-modulation. if you put a machine in a combinator, you can assign several knobs to a combinator-knob, which can be modulated by the malstrom. for some heavy-duty effects ;)

still that doesnt explain why the redrum exist if the nnxt is that much better... :)

basic setup:
i have a "basic" song template wich loads when i start reason
i have distributed this template to all my collegue songwriters, so i f we start a song, we start with the same base, and don't have to look / load all the "basic" sounds (32 MB)
it goes :
1 MIXER
1 combi TR-808(NNTX with 8 outputs routed 2 various EFX/equalizers =>submixer)
1 combi TR-909(NNTX...)
1 combi Oberheim
1 combi E-mu
1 combi LinnDrum/akai
1 combi DDrum/Clavia
1 combi "Human" Beatbox
1 combi Hits
1 combi Redrums with 7 redrums with "lesser" drummachines like Synclavier, Procussion, Alesis, Analog Drummachines...
Another MIXER
Some Rexplayers 2 insert rexfiles on the fly
Since these Rexfiles are associated with first number of notes on your keyboard (according to the number of slices), these Rexplayers cannot be put in a Combi
- have never learnt how to set-up a thing like that anyway-
greetz,
jay
ps. all the drum combi's use 24bit samples

u have to go to accesoires, open paint en paste as new image, then save to jpg, if u want more options, install a picture program like photofiltre or irfanvieuw, its free, always print screen, open program, paste as new image, save, then make ur post, attach image select the picture and it should work, greetz

for the effect on mixer freaks, if u want to use more effects then 4 on the mixer, create 2 spiders, 1 for the input and one for the output, connect up to 4 effects on both spiders, then go to the mixer, then u have 1 effect knob with up to 4 effects on it, (in the example 1 and 3) if u want to use only one of em for some parts, create a sequencer track for the effect and automate it on or off

for more extensive use of the aux-effects, put the return of the effect on a channel of the mixer instead of the mixer-return. that way, you can eq, pan and open the sends of those channels yet again to create a chain of effects. in combination with an automated combinator, you'll have kickass posibillities.
by the way, you can automate a combinator in ableton live, when you use rewire. go to the automation parameters of you midiclip, somewhere in the middle of the control-parameters, you'll find "rotary 1", "rotary 2", etc
the difference with automating the rotaries thru CV, is that it actually moves the knob instead of trimming the existing value, like CV does.
another thing that i do, is putting each instrument-group in its own combinator. like that, i can see all my instruments (which ones recieve notes or send out audio) when i minimize the combinators. it also helps a LOT to find your way in the session when you open it a year later

I'm a beginner with reason but here's a little trick with redrums;
I always put my kits like this (BD -> BassDrum, SD -> SnareDrums, T -> Tom, FX -> Effects, H -> Hats, CYM -> Cymbals)
The second line is another configuration ;)
By using this trick you can easily copy & modify your patterns in the sequencer using the same scheme...
Another tip is that you can make 2 HiHats of a single sample simply by pitching them and changing their length.

Another one is to make a filthy bass with a initialised THOR patch.
THOR is multi-osc synth (3 synth to be precise). Fortunatly it all uses the same param ("tune" in our case that represents 1/100 tone). So here is how to make a filthy bass for D&B or Dubstep apply. You just need to put 3 osc with the same "tune" and then put an automation on one of them and slowly pitch it to 50 or -50 it will gives a nice filthy effect.
