Forum : Producing Help : KRK RP6 vs RP8
FINALLY i'm going to buy myself a pair of monitors. i know there has been a thread in the past about the rp6 vs rp8 dilemma, but i can't find it, although it was quite a recent one..(?)
anyway, i'm reading a lot of reviews these days, and have come up with following findings:
*some say rp6 gives a more honest sound, some say rp8 is more honest
*rp8 (45 Hz - 8" woofer) should have a better bass response then the rp6 (49Hz - 6" woofer) although some say that the rp8 has a more muddy bass sound, too much bass...
i produce in a rather small room (let's say 3x4x3 meters or maybe smaller), so i'm guessing the smaller woofer is a better option for me.
but more important: because of my neighbours i often produce on rather low volume... so it's extremely important that the sound/mix is also representative on low volumes (so no bass cuts etc). i heard that the rp8 in that case gives a more honest sound.
budget is not really an issue as the rp8 is only 50 euros more expensive... i just need to make the right choice here :)
so, any thoughts on this? who has rp8 or rp6? how to do they sound on low volume? what about the measurements of your room?
i'd like your opinion before i check them out in the store, so i can pay extra attention :)
thanks!

I have KRK rp6
damned pleased, although he gives a lot of bass (I have to withhold myself from time tot time becouse I just keep adding bass to my tracks)
if this "problem" occurs with 6inch it makes me wonder what would happen with the 8inch speaker
not that I experience it as a big problem: I just check my tracks on other soundsystems like my two headsets.
Since I have my KRK's my sound has become so much cleaner, and darn, this boy likes it clean :)
good luck deciding^^

i do have rp8, i measured my room for you :);, my room is 3m87cm large 4m04cm lenght, the speakers are positioned in a corner with the back on the lenght, at height of my ears and in 30 grades in diagonal... dont know if it is the best position but i cant do it otherwise
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
i am very happy with the mixing results, it gives real sound and the mix is ok, dont have problems with the basses, when i make something on it, it sounds everywhere the same,
i havent tested the rp6, but i can say the rp8 are realy good stuff, its always interesting to put the music a little louder sometimes when u can, like u say u cant put it loud but you never know, the best thing is to text the mix 1 time loud and 1 time low
check out my latest tracks, they all are made with rp8

That was a thread over monitor choice...
As I said in that thread, I have some KRK rp8 and I'm really happy, I think they are the best buy in that price range.
PR6 would certainly be ok too but sometimes I like to push the volum up to get that "club" feeling...

thanks for your reactions...
it's not that i'm constantly producing on low volume or so :) i do put it loud, but when i produce for 6 hours or so, my neighbours don't like it loud all the time!
so i need to know whether these monitors are good on a modest volume, and whether the low freqs tend to flutter or not depending on room size...

i also have a neigbour of 84 years, realy annoying, i cant realy work at night cause making music with headphones doesnt give a good mix or real sound...
well yeah, i agree for a 84 year old person, but my previous neigbour was 30 and was ringing at my door at 14.00 Pm for the noize, so i learned him how to live and turned my speakers against the wall and put the volume on maximum with trancebeats, back in time there i didnt had monitors but big area speakers, sometimes you have to stand up, u know what i mean, there are times for making noize and shut the fuck up 7.30 am - 22.00 pm, and times to fold to the law. well in fact it resulted in that the guy bashed and destroyed the small look-who-it-is-window of the maindoor.. but he payed for it :p

If you have no good isolation, no decent studio or neighbours, i would go for the lower class monitors. I gues the 8s are louder than the 6s, but give the same kind of sound. You can still go pretty loud with 6, but if you're using 8 and you're neighbours complain the whole time, its pretty useless...
krk are indeed pretty heavy in bass, they kind of pump your sound
not that fan of the sound of em..
i recently bought yamaha hs50 (not the 80s, because they're simply too loud) for 150 a piece. And they give the most crystal clear sound possible
good luck

i had yamahas before, i dont know which model it was, not sure if they were the same as harry popins says, but i wasnt realy happy with em, they gave realy unreal sound and bad mixes, then i switched to krk and never had problems anymore

From what I've read (and heard myself when testing them thouroughly in the store) those yamaha's give a slightly wronger bass image then the KRK franchise... (the shopkeeper seconded that statement)
Especially if you go for the one with bass unther 8 inch.
Practically no bass, thats why they invented a special sub for those. So you'd buy the cheap ones first and realise after a year you can't mix on bass, forcing you to buy a sub as well. So if you go for yamaha I'd sugest you would buy the normal ones (hs80).
A friend of mine has the HS80m's and he is (rightfuly)very pleased. Though if we colab, sometimes I have to reboost his basses in the mixdown, and sometimes I have to tonedown my basses in the mixdown^^ So there doesn't seem to be a clear awnser which one is the most exact.
If I were you I simply wouldn't know which one to pick: yamaha/krk
Some claim yamaha isn't all that, and then other claim krk are no good.
so:good luck choosing :)

i would go for the rp6 and buy the woofer instead of the rp8, since i find it to be a disadvantage that there is no way to adjust the amount of bass on them. personally i have the old (square) version of the 8's.
